Nakamise shopping street leading to Sensoji temple in Asakusa,Tokyo,was jam-packed with visitors Monday as the New Year approached.Mayudama,festive bamboo twigs hung with red and white cocoon-shaped cakes,said to be a talisman against evil,are suspended from shop eaves.The temple’s main hall is being renovated,but visitors can still enter it even though the exterior is covered.

東京浅草にある浅草寺へ続く仲見世どおりでは、月曜日新年が近づいたので観光客でいっぱいになった。悪に対するお守りと言われる赤と白の繭の形をしたお菓子と祝祭用の竹をつるした繭玉は、店の軒にぶら下がっている。寺のメインホールは改装されたが、外側が覆われていても観光客はまだ入ることができる。
